Lennox Berkeley :

Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo

This is a great sounding study that is on the list for the Grade 8 ABRSM exam. The first piece is for a clarinet in A. It is marked moderato, but the style of the piece allows you to choose your own tempo characteristics. This piece has some very difficult passages that would require a grade 6/7 player to practice quite a few times before getting "under the fingers". The second piece is similar in approach to the first piece. It's marked lento and 54 BPM. This piece starts and ends in a slow but chilling mood with a ferocious middle section. Again, this piece is only for advanced players as both the range and rhythms are quite complex. The third piece is certainly my favorite of the pieces. It is marked Allegro and unlike the other pieces keeps a steady tempo. This piece has both an interesting style and rhythms. The basic theme has several variations that are repeated throughout the piece. (One of which is available here). This collection of music will provide the advanced clarinet player with a challenge that when completed will give them a welcome addition to their repertoire. If you are at Grade 6 or above then I would strongly recommend you add this piece to your collection.
